Scout Programs

 

Roaring Brook Nature Center offers a wide variety of programs that can take place either at the center or at your school.  The Nature Center itself has a small interpretive building and 5 miles of hiking trails on about 100 acres of a state owned wildlife preserve.The Nature Center also offers general seasonal walks or walks with a particular focus (for example birds, reptiles, etc.).








 

 
Girl Scout Programs

Daisy Scouts - We offer seasonal nature walk designed to help scouts' awareness and appreciation of their natural environment. 

NEW BROWNIE, JUNIOR & CADETTE BADGES!

The Girl Scout badges have changed and we are now offering assistance with portions of the the following badges and other portions of the Journey activities:

Service Badges: Call the Nature Center to discuss possible projects such as planting / weeding our Native Plant Butterfly Garden, the Porritt Wildlflower Trail or our Bird Garden.

Wish List: The Nature Center always welcomes donations that help us care for our orphaned, injured or resident animals.

Information

When - One hour programs are weekdays except Thursday beginning at 2:45 pm (or later).  Picnic facilities or the auditorium are available on request for refreshments (please bring a trash bag to carry home your refuse!).

Cost - Cost of each visit is $6.00 per scout for a one hour program (limit of 20 scouts).  There is no charge for scout leaders or chaperones; extra siblings over the age of 4 will be charged at a rate of $6.00 per child.  There is a $30 minimum charge per visit.

Two hour programs are available for Junior Scout Groups only.  Cost is $8.50 per Scout with $50 minimum.


A $20.00 nonrefundable deposit must accompany yourregistration form with the balance due and payable the day of your Troop's visit.

How to Register - Please call the Nature Center to set up a date and time for your program.  Then, fill out the registration form and send it to Roaring Brook Nature Center with your $20 deposit.   No further confirmation will be necessary.  If we do not receive your registration within two weeks of phone registration, we will contact you.  Dates can not be held without a deposit.

Refunds & Rescheduling - If your Troop must cancel due to inclement weather, every effort will be made to reschedule on another date without additional charge.  Advance notification is necessary in order to reschedule a program without loss of deposit.

Additional Information - These are OUTDOOR PROGRAMS.  Please make sure that girls dress appropriately for the existing weather conditions.  Remember, it may be colder or wetter here than at your house.  For additional information, please contact the Nature Center.

Boy Scouts / Cub Scouts

Webelos - We will cover most of the requirements for the following badges:

    • Geologist
    • Forester
    • Naturalist Activity Badges

Bear Scouts - All requirements are covered for "Sharing Your World With Wildlife" (#5) on the Big Bear Trail.   We will also do "Water & Soil Conservation" on the Arrow Point Trail.   (These are based on the 1991 Big Bear Cub Scout Book.  Please notify us if requirements have been changed.)

Tiger Cubs - We offer guided walk through the Nature Center's trails and opportunities to talk with and ask questions of one of our naturalists.  (If a parent/family accompanies each scout, the cost of this program will be based on the total number of people present.)

Roaring Brook Nature Center is also a great place to fulfill Community Service Projects, including Eagle Scout Badge requirements! 

Bear and Webelo groups wishing to work toward the
Cub Scout World Conservation Award
may do so by fulfilling requirements and/or doing service projects
at the Nature Center.

Cost - Cost of each visit is $6.00 per scout (with a limit of 20 scouts).  There is no charge for scout leaders or chaperones; extra siblings over the age of 4 will be charged at a rate of $6.00 per child.  For Tiger Cubs, if each Tiger Cub is accompanied by an adult, we charge $3.00 per adults, and $6.00 per scout.  There is a $30 minimum charge per visit.
